When I found out that the block of interwar apartments in New Farm that overlooks the Brisbane River was demolished, I was in shock. It harks back to the Bjelkie Petersen era and the Dean Brothers midnight demolition squad.
They left just two walls - neither facing the river standing on the skin of their teeth. To top it off, the council has given them a slap on the wrist over what is prime real estate which is being redeveloped for lucrative $30 million hi-rise apartments.
Sadly, a piece of Brisbane's riverside character has gone by the wayside.
